Basics of FOIA Requests and Litigation

10 July 2019
Live PLI Groupcast

Since 1966, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) has given the public the right to seek a broad range of records from federal administrative agencies and to enforce those rights in court. Used by individuals, scholars, activists and corporations, it is a vital tool of democratic accountability and transparency.

In this one-hour briefing, we will discuss the basics of making FOIA requests, exhausting the administrative appeal process, and litigating failures to disclose in federal court.

Please join the PLI presenter as she discusses:

  • How to craft and file a FOIA request to a federal agency
  • The nine exemptions from the FOIA that enable the government to withhold certain documents
  • Enforcing the FOIA through litigation in federal court
