Alex Wolcott focuses his practice on intellectual property counseling and litigation for domestic and international clients across a variety of technologies, including telecommunications, automotive, consumer products, artificial intelligence, computed tomography (CT) equipment, oil & gas drilling, microelectromechanical systems and batteries.
Alex has drafted hundreds of patent applications and uses his keen understanding of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to prosecute patent applications efficiently and effectively. He works with smaller inventors to identify and protect innovations critical for growth, and larger companies to draft Standard Essential Patent (SEP) applications for coverage by technology standards, such as 3GPP and IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi). Prior to joining the firm, Alex was a patent examiner at the USPTO, where he reviewed patent applications filed by companies including Amazon, eBay, Oracle and Xerox. In addition, Alex gained significant experience in subject matter eligibility issues under Section 101, and relies on this expertise to help inventors navigate this ever-evolving field of law.
Alex has successfully defended clients in Section 337 investigations at the US International Trade Commission (ITC) by invalidating asserted patents for oil & gas drilling, and in federal court by reaching amicable settlement agreements related to computer network routers. Alex frequently applies his background in patent prosecution to skillfully develop strategies and identify weaknesses throughout the course of litigation.
Prior to his legal career, Alex designed custom supply chain software solutions with Manhattan Associates in Atlanta, Georgia. In particular, Alex implemented automated package handling equipment, order pickers and conveyor robotics in the retail, chemical, as well as tobacco industries.
