Ruaridh Guy is a seasoned litigator with a primary focus on providing strategic counsel to clients in the shipping and trade sectors, specializing in a diverse array of dispute resolution matters.

Qualified in both England and Wales and Hong Kong, Ruaridh brings a wealth of experience, covering contentious issues within the maritime and trade domains, as well as demonstrating substantial expertise in contentious insolvency matters. His practice involves advising and representing parties across a spectrum of cases related to shipping, international trade and commodities.

Ruaridh has successfully navigated both court proceedings and arbitrations, with his expertise extending to prominent arbitration venues such as Hong Kong, London and Singapore, including London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA), Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group (HKMAG), Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) arbitrations.

In the realm of dry shipping, he offers comprehensive proficiency in areas such as bills of lading, charterparties, contracts of affreightment, and ship sale and purchase contracts. Ruaridh's capabilities encompass advising on wet shipping matters, including fires, groundings and fixed object damage. He also possesses a wealth of experience in handling diverse trade and commodities disputes, particularly in the trade of oil and oil products, gas, coal and metals.

In addition to shipping and trade matters, Ruaridh has substantial experience of commercial disputes generally, both in arbitration and in Hong Kong court proceedings.

Ruaridh has given expert evidence on both English and Hong Kong law for the purpose of foreign proceedings in several jurisdictions, including Korea and Thailand.

Beyond dispute resolution, he actively engages in negotiating and drafting contracts, ranging from bespoke agreements to standard terms, including charterparties, sale contracts and insurance policies. Notably, his proficiency extends to futures and options agreements, reflecting a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies within the field.

  • Advised several insurers on issues arising out of the 2015 Tianjin explosion.
  • Acted for creditors of STX Pan Ocean and its related companies in relation to large claims in the rehabilitation/insolvency proceedings.
  • Represented the buyers of a cargo of iron pipes that suffered catastrophic damage en route from China to Australia.
  • Acted for lenders seeking to enforce their security over several vessels following a borrower’s default.
  • Acting in several substantial unsafe port claims, arising from incidents in a range of locations, including Brazil, Panama and the Mississippi River.
  • Acting for owners and their insurers in relation to several major cargo fires, often involving chemical cargoes.
  • Acting for owners in several concurrent arbitrations arising from the early termination of long-term bareboat charterparties for a fleet of chemical tankers.
