Roger Cartwright is a senior associate in our Environmental, Safety & Health Practice Group, based in the Manchester office.

Roger has particular expertise in representing and defending both corporate and individual clients faced with regulatory investigations and prosecutions arising out of all health, safety and environmental matters. He also regularly represents clients at inquests and has recently expanded his practice to include public inquiry work (acting on the Grenfell, COVID-19 and Post Office Horizon inquiries).

Roger has also advised on a wide range of environmental matters, including pollution, breaches of discharge consents, permit compliance and noise abatement.

Roger was recognised as a Rising Star in the Legal 500, being recommended for his “tenacity and focus” on his cases.

  • Representing an owner-operator of music venues in a large and complex corporate manslaughter investigation.
  • Defended the leading designer/manufacturer of ejection seats in relation to a Health and Safety Executive prosecution arising from the death of a Red Arrows pilot whose ejection seat inadvertently activated and the parachute failed to engage.
  • Successfully defended a global retailer, in its capacity as tenant of a restaurant, in relation to the near-miss death of a woman and four children as a result of a defective platform lift.
  • Successfully defended a well-known food manufacturer in relation to a prosecution by the Environment Agency following an alleged pollution incident.
  • Represented a global mining company in a highly technical and sensitive case involving potentially defective conveyor belts being used on large-scale, active tunnelling projects.
  • Represented a global facilities management company, which operated across a large number of NHS hospitals, in relation to an inquest arising from the death of an employee from COVID-19.
  • Represented and advised major supermarkets in relation to local authority investigations and prosecutions arising from the alleged sale of unsafe food.
