Asian Legal Business has named Nick Chan, Medal of Honour recipient and Justice of the Peace, in its 2022 Super 50 TMT Lawyers list. The list recognizes the region’s standout lawyers in the technology, media and telecommunications space, based on the views of in-house counsel and legal practitioners in Asia.
With a background in computer science, in-house experience at two Fortune 100 technology companies and qualified on the roll of solicitors in Hong Kong, England and Wales, Australia and as a China Appointed Attesting Officer, Mr. Chan advises governments, private sector clients, funds and non-governmental organizations on an array of different projects across Asia Pacific, the US and the EU. His expertise includes commercial, intellectual property, compliance, data privacy, data security, cybersecurity, M&A, PE/VC and public policy advocacy with a focus on 5G, metaverse, artificial intelligence, advertising and media, anticorruption, autonomous vehicles, big data, blockchain, cloud services, commercialization, content acquisition and licensing, cryptography technology, EduTech, IaaS, IoT, LawTech, LifeScience, ODR, Research-to-Industry, PaaS, PropTech, RetailTech, SaaS, smart data, Smart City and V2X.
Mr. Chan has worked on the liberalization of telecommunications markets in many jurisdictions, including market entry and exit, joint ventures, multibillion-dollar technology projects, data center projects and spectrum allocation projects as well as drafting and implementation of competition guidelines, IP and commercialization policies.
He serves the wider community on many boards and committees, including as director of the AALCO Hong Kong Regional Arbitration Centre, chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce Legal Committee, council member of Chinese University of Hong Kong, ex-chair of the Knowledge Transfer Committee of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, member of the multi-billion dollars Hong Kong Government Innovation and Technology Venture Fund advisory committee, member of the Legal Aid Services Council. He is also the honorary legal advisor for various leading trade associations including the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing, Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association, Hong Kong Information Technology Federation, International Federation of Creativity and Technology. He has guest lectured at business schools and Peking University, and this year is a visiting fellow, teaching Law, Business and Technology at City University’s LLM program. Mr. Chan serves as an elected congressman and is involved in law and policy formulation.
