Nick Chan Confirmed as Elected Member of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China

Squire Patton Boggs partner Nick Chan, Medal of Honour recipient, is now a publicly elected member of the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China, as confirmed at a recent meeting of the NPC Standing Committee.

The NPC is the highest organ of state power in People’s Republic of China. The role of the NPC includes amending the constitution and overseeing its enforcement, amending and enacting laws, and approving the plans and budget for national economic and social development projects.

Mr. Chan is one of 36 NPC deputies based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative region, and he is the only lawyer from an international law firm currently serving in that role.

With wide-ranging corporate, commercial and compliance, PE/VC, technology media and telecommunications, employment, and competition and regulatory experience, Mr. Chan advises governments, private sector clients, funds and non-governmental organizations on an array of different projects across Asia Pacific, the US and the UK. He serves on many boards and committees, including as council member and vice chairman of Knowledge Transfer Committee of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and in other capacities for three other universities, on hospital governing committee, and as chairman, member and adjudicator in various appeal boards.
