Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. has combined with renowned Japan-based firm Miki & Yoshida Law and Patent Office in a move that strengthens Squire Sanders’ ability to counsel clients on intellectual property matters in Japan.
“We are delighted to join forces with Miki & Yoshida, which has a well-deserved national reputation for IP and patent work,” said Ken Kurosu, Squire Sanders Tokyo office managing partner and the firm’s Asia practice coordinator. “Squire Sanders lawyers have had the privilege of working closely with founding lawyers Shigeru Miki and Masao Yoshida for more than two decades. Their extensive experience will significantly benefit clients, both those based in Japan and those doing business in Japan.”
Steven S. Doi, who serves on Squire Sanders’ firmwide management committee, said the combination is timely given Japan’s changing economic climate: “Japan-based companies increasingly perceive IP as a strategic asset that is critical to their global success, and so it is important for us to be able to assist clients in these matters. In addition, the combined firm adds to our ability as Kyodo Jigyo – a firm with Japanese lawyers and non-Japanese lawyers.”
“Squire Sanders’ global reach, which spans Asia, Europe, Latin America and the United States, will benefit our clients in Japan, particularly those merging with companies that have assets outside Japan,” said Miki, former senior partner at Miki & Yoshida. “A firm that operates globally can better meet our clients’ needs and help handle the increasingly important IP matters, both at a local and global level.”
