María Vara Pitarch

Maria Vara Pitarch focuses her practice on areas relating to international trade, EU and UK sanctions regulations and regulatory compliance. She also has experience in areas such as foreign direct investment (FDI) transactions, project finance, international exports of dual-use goods, investment protection and, recently, regulated markets.
Maria is regularly involved in other compliance-related matters, such as mechanisms for the detection and prevention of bribery and corruption or the design of clauses and other contractual provisions for the protection of companies specifically tailored according to the requirements of each organisation’s business model.
- Providing ongoing advice to banks, multilateral organisations, and companies, in connection with transactions and operations related to countries or persons (natural and legal) subject to US, EU and UN international sanctions.
- Providing ongoing advice to banks, multilateral organisations, and companies, in relation to compliance with sanctions provisions and the EU Blocking Regulation.
- Advising several Spanish oil companies with a global presence in relation to compliance with international sanctions and export controls.
- Advising an international medical-pharmaceutical company in relation to international sanctions against Russia.
- Advising a Chinese company in relation to customs compliance and export controls in the EU.
- Advising a number of European companies in the financial and banking sector on sanctions compliance with high-risk countries.
- Providing ongoing advice to an energy company in relation to transactions involving sanctioned countries or persons (natural and legal).
