Squire Patton Boggs has advised the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) pro bono on its statement to the International Court of Justice in the advisory opinion proceedings on Obligation of States in Respect of Climate Change.

The WWF statement responds to the questions posed in the request for an advisory opinion, focusing, given WWF’s expertise, on State’s obligations with respect to protecting biodiversity from the impacts of climate change. The statement explains the need for the Court to address these obligations in its advisory opinion given the threat posed to biodiversity by greenhouse gases and other climate change effects, as well as the threat to present and future generations if biodiversity is depleted. The statement highlights the significant role that certain species and ecosystems play in mitigating the effects of climate change, in particular.

The Squire Patton Boggs team advising WWF was led by International Dispute Resolution partner Naomi Briercliffe, assisted by partners Charles Rosenberg, José Feris and associates Aleksandra Dziki, Paul Von Mühlendahl, and Hoda Ghassabian Gilan. Barristers from Matrix Chambers, Doughty Street Chambers, Brick Court Chambers and No 5 Chambers have also been involved in the project.

“We are proud to have supported WWF in presenting its views to the Court,” said Ms. Briercliffe. “Drawing on our expertise in public international law, we have worked closely with WWF to prepare a statement explaining WWF’s position on the significance of State’s obligations with regard to the conservation of biodiversity for the Court’s advisory opinion.”
