Maria Gomez is an associate in the Litigation Practice group. As a lawyer with two degrees, from both a civil-law and a common-law jurisdiction, her practice focuses on complex dispute resolution, including litigation in state and federal courts, as well as arbitration at both the domestic and international levels. She represents clients in industries such as construction, real estate and manufacturing, with a particular emphasis on breach of contract claims, construction disputes and other significant commercial matters.

Fluent in both Spanish and English, she has advised clients on infrastructure projects across Latin America, Europe and North America. Her experience includes providing strategic legal counsel to multinational corporations, government entities and private investors to ensure successful project development and execution within challenging regulatory frameworks.

Maria previously served as intern to the Honorable John O’Sullivan at the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

  • Represented the Republic of Ecuador in a PCA investment arbitration under the UNCITRAL rules concerning the construction and modernization of oil refineries. The arbitration involved complex issues of treaty obligations, breach of investment protections and claims for damages arising from the alleged failure to fulfill contractual commitments by the Ecuadorian government.
  • Represented the Republic of Peru in a commercial arbitration under the ICSID rules regarding a concession agreement for the construction and operation of Line 2 of the Metro de Lima. The dispute involved extensive legal and contractual complexities surrounding project delays, cost overruns and the allocation of risks and responsibilities between the parties.
  • Secured dismissal of claims brought by a US company against a foreign state entity for breach of contract relating to the modernization of national postal services in the Southern District of Florida. The court ruled in favor of the defendant, finding the contract invalid due to the unauthorized signing of the agreement by a former government official.
  • Represented an Ecuadorian telecommunications company in a commercial arbitration under the ICDR rules involving a dispute over broadcasting rights and payments for televised content in Ecuador. The dispute involved legal issues related to the interpretation of contract terms, breach of agreement and financial claims.
  • Represented a Spain-based energy company in a commercial arbitration under the ICC rules involving an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) project. The dispute focused on complex issues related to project delays, cost overruns and performance problems in the execution of a large-scale, turnkey infrastructure project.
  • Secured dismissal of claims brought by several US creditors against foreign national who sought damages related to promissory notes in a case involving alleged fraud and breach of fiduciary duties.
  • Representing a REIT in a variety of complex legal matters, including disputes over real estate contract breaches, property title issues and construction-related concerns. Managing multiple commercial litigation proceedings including claims related to contractor performance and other key challenges affecting high-value real estate transactions and development projects.
  • Representing a foreign aluminum importer in a qui tam action brought by the US national involving allegations of underpayment of duties.
